The face running text is set in. The serif is the institution’s own; the humanist sans is set slightly wider and suits screens read at a distance.

Leading

The space between lines. Generous leading helps a long passage; tight leading fits more on the screen.

Tracking

The space between letters. Open tracking is recommended for readers with dyslexia.

Text Alignment

Running prose is justified to both margins, as a printed page is. Ragged-right removes the word-spacing that justification requires.

Drop Capitals

The three-line versal that opens a chapter. Some screen magnifiers reflow awkwardly around it.

Arabic Script Size

Arabic carries its meaning in marks that sit above and below the line, and is set larger than Latin at the same nominal size.

Contrast

Raises every text colour, border and rule to the strongest ratio the palette allows.

Links

Underlining every link in running text, rather than only on hover.

Focus Ring

The outline that marks where the keyboard is. A strong ring is recommended for anyone navigating without a mouse.

Interface Sound

The soft mechanical response on buttons, panels and confirmations. Silent by preference, and silent by default on any device that asks for reduced motion.

The Spoken Introduction

The school's recorded welcome, played once on a first arrival and never again in the same visit. It has its own switch, so quietening the interface does not take the voice with it.

Imagery

Lean loads photographs only when they reach the screen and holds decorative layers back — for a slower connection or a metered one.

Read This Page Aloud

Puts a listen control in the masthead. It reads the page's own headings and paragraphs using the voice already installed on your device — nothing is fetched and nothing is sent anywhere — and lights each passage as it is spoken.

Ornament

The engraved furniture — corner rules, travelling-light rings, guilloche, watermarks and letterhead rules. Reduce it for a plainer page; remove it for a document.

Corners

Softened corners read as objects you could pick up; square ones read as printed matter.

Depth

How far the cards and panels stand off the page.

Paper Grain

A fine laid texture across the pale bands, the way a good stock is not perfectly smooth.

Raking Light

The gilt highlight that follows the pointer across headings, rules and figures — the difference between gold-coloured and gilded.

Parallax Depth

How far the layers drift against each other as the page scrolls.

How Sections Arrive

The movement a band makes as it comes into view.

Measure

The width of the reading column. A narrower measure is easier on the eye; a wider one fits more to the screen.

Letterpress

A hairline of light along the top edge of display type and a whisper of shadow beneath — the impression a metal face leaves in a good stock.

Ambient Motes

Points of gold drifting slowly across the dark bands, the way there is always something in the light in a real room.

Page Transitions

A curtain crosses the screen between pages instead of the page simply replacing itself.

Reading Ruler

A band of warmth that follows the pointer down the page, so the line you are reading is the line that is lit. An aid rather than an ornament, and off unless you ask for it.

Numerals

Which figures the Arabic pages set dates, times and counts in. As published keeps each page as its editors wrote it.
